Olympus E-510 Review
The Olympus E-510 has recently been announced featuring a powerful 10-megapixel Live MOS sensor which is capable of Live Preview. This Four Thirds-based D-SLR also has a built-in sensor shift image stabilizer. The E-510 shows the embodiment of both style and functionality promising both advanced users and beginners high quality resolution and very detailed images and videos. Olympus acknowledges that this camera will deliver sharp and clear images on its 2.5-inch HyperCrystal LCD display. Just like the other E-system digital cameras, the E-510 is dustproof with its Supersonic Wave Filter. The Four Thirds System of the Olympus E-510 digital camera is the first and only one available for digital SLRs. This gadget makes use of a 4/3-type image sensor which is ideal for customized interchangeable lenses. The system creates the advantages of small size, light weight and better light provision compared to 35 mm formats. The Live Preview is another highlight which allows you to frame shots via the viewfinder wherein capture shots are immediately displayed on the LCD screen after it goes through the lens and image sensor. The Live Preview just like the Four Thirds System is new on D-SLRs. Olympus pioneered the use of Live Previews on D-SLRs. There are ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses available for the E-510. You can view pictures in RAW or JPEG format from a minimum of 640 x 480 up to a maximum of 3648 x 2736. The Olympus E-510 digital camera has an image stabilizer based on sensor shifts which works an electromagnetic system. The results are no blurs, shakiness and great focus when taking shots at a distance. There are gyro sensors and supersonic wave protect the shots and maintain focus and detail despite camera shakes and unexpected motions. The image stabilizer effectively works with all types of lens attached to the camera. The Olympus E-510 has a Supersonic Wave Filter that protects the camera from dust whenever you change lenses. There is a transparent filter just between the shutter and CCD sensor that keeps dust particles out including the ones that have accumulated on the filter. Ultrasonic vibrations and the supersonic wave drive out dust to ensure maximum protection and prevention of photo damage in the D-SLR. The 2.5-inch HyperCrystal LCD display is able to reflect light from outside sources making overall presentation brilliant. You can enjoy viewing from a variety of angles with no glare or shadowing. Even if the screen is under direct sunlight, you get clear and detailed images. The 170-degree angle allowance makes it convenient for several people to view all at the same time. Files and shots are saved in JPEG or RAW format in the xD-Picture card although you can also use Microdrive or Compact Flash in Type I or II. The Olympus E-510 digital camera is USB connectible with video out and compatible with NTSC and PAL. This D-SLR runs on a 1500 mAh Lithium-ion rechargeable battery. The complete package includes the E-150 body, 14-42 mm lens, Lithium-ion battery, battery charger, USB cable, AV cable, shoulder strap, user CD, user manual and warranty card. Shutter speeds range automatically from 2 to 1/4000 second. Flash X-sync speed can be either 1/180 or 1/4000 second in Super FP mode. Aperture values may be 1/3, ½ or 1 EV step increments depending on the lens you are using. There are also various scene modes like Macro, Nature Macro, Portrait, Night Portrait, Landscape, Sunset and many others. White Balance options include Auto, Lamp, Fluorescent 123, Daylight, Kelvin and many others. Image parameters may be in Color mode in Vivid, Natural, Muted or Monotone or Saturation, Graduation, Contrast, Sharpness or Monochrome. Drive modes can be Single, Continuous, Self-timer or via the remote control. You can also take continuous shots with a maximum of 6 frames. The N-MOS sensor of the E-510 is the feature that allows you to compose using the main color screen instead of the viewfinder as most D-SLRs do. The camera also provides you with 100% coverage and good graphics, grids and histogram. Its design is reminiscent to the E-500 its predecessor. The buttons and handgrip are comfortable. Flash brackets and focus ring are well-placed. This camera measures 136 x 92 x 68 mm and weighs 460 grams without the battery. Pros: The 10-megapixel sensor is powerful and provides you with great shots. There is also the Supersonic Wave Filter that protects your photos, unique Image Stabilizer that prevents blurs and color distortions and the Four Thirds System. You can expect nothing but sharp and detailed shots with the double lens and powerful zoom, ISO and aperture values and multiple settings. You can virtually take great shots even in the most unfavorable conditions. Cons: The Olympus E-510 cannot record voice or video. The viewfinder is rather small although you can do a lot with its multiple features. The pinch-type lens cover seems obsolete these days. Overall: The Olympus E-510 digital camera is ideal for beginners and advanced users. At $999, it is one great buy. The unique features like Live Preview, Supersonic Wave Filter, double lens and Image Stabilizer make it one powerful D-SLR. Photos are of good quality and the system is very consistent with the overall specifications. |
