The camera can be left us with lots of wonderful memories
I shoot Sony and Love it. The only thing Canon has over Sony IMO is the choice of Lenses and accessories. I don't really think you can go wrong with either one. I prefer Sony but you may prefer Canon more. I love buying 30-40 year old Minolta lens on ebay and being able to use them on my DSLR. Not saying you can't do that with Canon but you're probably not going to have full range of function if you do. I would go to a camera store and try both out as well as Nikon, and Pentax.
