Default Sony Cybershot T100

Sony Cybershot T100 Review

Sony has come up with a new digital camera that uses an 8.1 megapixels Super HAD CCD sensor, a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar zoom lens with a focal range of 5x optical zoom, which can be expanded thanks to a 10x Precision Digital zoom. Called the Sony Cybershot T100, the camera boasts of HD Smart shooting and an HD output compatible with HD television sets.

Other features include an anti-shake mechanism called Super Steady Shot, a double anti-blur technology; and high sensitivity up to ISO 3200. The 3” LCD monitor is large enough to be used for its integrated Face Detection technology, another interesting new feature.

The Sony Cybershot T100 camera also comes bundled with a BIONZ processor: quite useful, this image processor uses data from the camera’s 8 megapixel CCD sensor, minimizes noise levels and makes sure you get a copy that is as close to the real thing with fine detail, vivid color and subtle tonal graduations.

The Sony Cybershot T100 comes in a compact, squarish design and industrial metal finish (though you can also get a red or black unit), measuring 3.5 x 2.25 x .87 in. and weighs 6 ounces. It is equipped with a Memory Stick Duo card and long lasting lithium battery. The compact design is great, as you can take it anywhere you go in the safety of your little pocket. Just be careful not to scratch the 3” LCD screen located at the back of the device.

The camera has a front panel that slides up and down to power up or close. When you slide the panel down, the lens, flash, AF Illuminator sensor and mic will appear. You may like the 5x non-protruding optical zoom in Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar glass, which is a first in this series. On the upside, the T100 makes use of a powerful focal length of 35 to 175mm in 35mm, greater than what you most digicams have.

At the back, you have the LCD, as well as the Menu and Home keys, wide/tele toggle switch, and four-way controller that functions with a center set key. The shutter button is at the top while the power and playback keys are at the side. You can find the battery/memory card slots at the right side and use the bottom to attach a tripod mount and a Sony connector that should be used if you’re planning to attach it to the TV – just use the A/V inputs or USB cable if you plan to connect to a computer.

The great thing here is that you get to use it with your HDTV, albeit needing another accessory with HD connectors that is not included in the bundle. You can try the Sony CSS-HD1 dock with component video output, a remote control with a function that allows you to recharge the battery, though maybe a little pricey at $79.

The rest of the package includes the body, strap, hydra-cable, CD ROM with software and drivers.

Pros: Thanks to the large 3" screen, you can easily compose great shots, and in camera trimming/cropping function and 5X zoom is a big help in this regard. The Sony Cybershot T100 seems to work well in natural light. Interesting how you can also zoom in or out when using movie mode. The Face Detection mode places lighted squares on the faces you take, and helps in creating clear faces on your picture. The slideshow player makes a great addition.

Cons: There may be more to be desired with regards to performance of this camera indoors. Low quality photo resolutions may not be apparent, unless you zoom into the picture’s actual size.

Overall: The Sony Cybershot T100 may be a case of overrated reviews and hype, though performance can take a dip without suffficient light. It’s arguable whether you should spend money on a T100 for watching HDTV in or for taking pictures. Nevertheless, the design is fashionable and trendy, and will definitely make a cool accessory to your outfit.
